Hendersonville's community art initiative has reached a major milestone. The annual Bearfootin' Bear Art Walk auction achieved a historic fundraising record in its 24-year history, pulling in a total of $145,700 to support local organizations and downtown programs.

The successful two-week virtual bidding event brought together 80 dedicated bidders who placed a combined 327 bids on the unique, hand-painted bear sculptures.

Auction Success and High-Value Sales

Strong collector interest drove up the final totals, highlighted by competitive buying trends leading right into the live event. Notable aspects of the auction included:

  • Six of the 20 featured bears sold early through a "Buy Now" option priced at $10,000.
  • The "Buy Now" availability extended through the Thursday leading up to the final auction close.
  • Total proceeds reached $145,700, marking the highest financial return in the 24-year history of the program.

Benefiting Local Nonprofits

Funds generated from the decorated bear sculptures are distributed carefully to sustain both the event infrastructure and designated community charities. The funding structure ensures that:

  • The first $3,000 of every winning bid is split with the organizing group, Friends of Downtown Hendersonville.
  • This initial split helps sustain future event operations and backs the broader Downtown Program.
  • Any winning bid amount exceeding the $3,000 threshold goes entirely to the artist's designated local nonprofit.

Looking Ahead to the Next Season

With the 2026 auction concluded, the Town of Hendersonville is already preparing for the next cycle. Applications for the 2027 Bearfootin' Bears season are scheduled to open on November 1.

To ensure a smooth organizational process, bear sponsorship applications will only be accepted for a strict one-week window. Town officials noted that if applicant interest exceeds the available 20 bear slots, participants will be selected through a random lottery system.
