Financial institutions exploring digital finance are finding that modern infrastructure offers value extending far beyond basic storage. According to research released by Ripple on October 21 and conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), traditional banks can unlock up to $100 million in financial improvements by linking digital asset services with specialized custody systems.
As stablecoins, blockchain payments, and tokenized funds scale past initial pilot phases across various networks, institutional storage solutions are evolving into the core operating layer for modern digital finance. Beyond holding tokens, custody platforms allow institutions to govern and move assets securely throughout everyday financial workflows.
BCG Findings and Financial Gains
The BCG research highlights that a typical regional bank managing a balance sheet between $200 billion and $300 billion could achieve up to $100 million in performance improvements. This shift reframes custody from a traditional center for cost and risk management into an active creator of financial value.
Modern institutional custody models currently account for digital assets while stablecoins, tokenized assets, and blockchain payments move past the pilot stage. Key drivers for banks adopting these solutions include:
- Issuing stablecoins designed to track an external reference value
- Executing real-time blockchain payments and treasury management operations
- Supporting lending structures and digital collateral management
- Maintaining rigorous security and cryptographic key management
Market Adoption and Infrastructure Trends
Financial institutions are utilizing varying deployment models to meet client demands. Major banks and financial entities are integrating advanced digital asset infrastructure into their operations. Real-world implementations reflect this architectural shift:
- Standard Chartered: Operating through its regulated Dubai International Financial Centre branch, the bank is involved in a planned $RLUSD collateral mirroring arrangement where eligible holdings would remain in Standard Chartered’s custody while their value supports trading positions at LMAX, subject to final documentation, successful testing, applicable laws and regulations, internal approvals, and jurisdictional readiness.
Tokenization and the Broader Blockchain Landscape
The expansion of institutional custody directly supports the booming market for tokenized assets and funds. Data from Token Terminal indicates that total tokenized funds across 33 chains reached $34.2 billion. Ethereum leads this ecosystem, capturing 47.1% of the on-chain market capitalization, followed by the BNB Chain at 13.0% and Stellar at 10.5%.
As tokenization gains traction as a financial innovation, interest in tokenization continues to increase across the financial sector.
