A 15-year-old boy was arrested and remanded into secure detention following a mass shooting that injured 12 people near Florida Agricultural + Mechanical University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, police announced.
The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, close to the university's football stadium during FAMU's homecoming weekend. According to the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD), the violence left 12 people injured—six adults and six minors—with all but one sustaining gunshot wounds.
Investigators stated that the gunfire apparently erupted during a physical altercation between the suspect and individuals known to him. TPD noted that, at this stage of the investigation, none of the injured victims appear to have been the intended targets.
Following a police investigation, the 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Sunday and subsequently charged with 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder, along with an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a delinquent.
TPD Chief Lawrence Revell addressed the tragedy in a statement, expressing sorrow that a celebratory homecoming weekend was marred by violence. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information, photos, or digital evidence regarding the shooting to contact the department's dedicated tip line or online evidence portal.
