24-Year-Old Woman Dies After Collapsing Near Finish of New York City Marathon

A 24-year-old runner has died after collapsing during the final stages of the New York City Marathon on Sunday, according to her family.

Rachel Apa collapsed in Central Park with roughly two miles remaining in the race, her father, Steve Apa, told the New York Times. Her father stated that she passed away from rhabdomyolysis.

It was the first marathon for Apa, a former college athlete whom her father described as being in "perfect shape." She was participating in the event as a member of the Parkinson's Champions team, running to honor her late grandfather, who had suffered from the disease.
