Adelaide 36ers Co-Captain Isaac Humphries Announces Retirement Due to Severe Knee Injury

Adelaide 36ers co-captain Isaac Humphries has been forced into an early retirement at age 28 following a persistent and severe knee injury. The 211-centimetre centre, who recently played in the NBL26 championship series, made the shock announcement on Tuesday morning after missing the opening rounds of the new fixture.

Humphries revealed that medical professionals questioned how he managed to continue playing given the extent of the damage. He stated that the physical toll has left him unable to play competitive sport again, noting that the decision was ultimately taken out of his hands by his body's limitations.

Beyond his accomplishments on the court—which included playing in the NBA, representing Australia internationally, and a decade of professional basketball—Humphries made history in 2022 while playing for Melbourne United. By publicly revealing his sexuality, he became the first male NBL player and only the second person in any top-tier basketball league globally to come out as openly gay. He has frequently described the historic moment as his proudest achievement.

While Humphries expressed concern that his departure might affect representation in the sport, he remains confident in his legacy. The Adelaide 36ers confirmed that Humphries will transition into a non-playing role with the club, with a formal career celebration scheduled for December.
