Aberfan Marks 60 Years Since Coal Tip Disaster
King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the Prince of Wales traveled to the village to join survivors, bereaved families, and local residents at the Aberfan Memorial Garden, which now stands on the site of the former school. A prayer and moment of silence were held to observe the exact time the tragedy struck six decades ago.
The solemn day of remembrance also featured performances by the Ynysowen Male Voice Choir—which includes men who lost relatives in the disaster—and wreath-layings by community members, emergency responders, and dignitaries including Wales' First Minister. Memorial events and bell ringings took place across Wales to honor the 144 lives lost.
