Families bereaved by the misuse of an infrared camera monitoring system deployed across half of England’s mental health wards have called for a national ban, warning that patients' lives are at immediate risk.

During hearings before the Lampard inquiry in Essex on Tuesday, legal representatives for more than 70 bereaved families urged inquiry chair Kate Lampard to recommend halting the use of the Oxevision system on inpatient wards. Lawyers stated that five patients died unexpectedly or killed themselves over a two-year period while being monitored by the technology at the Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (Eput).

The Lampard inquiry continues to examine systemic issues surrounding mental health inpatient deaths.
