A massive $6.3 billion security breach at Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has sent shockwaves through global markets, triggering sharp declines across prominent crypto stocks and digital currencies on Friday.
The incident began unfolding on Thursday following reports of the digital theft, which potentially stands as the largest cryptocurrency heist in history. In response to the breach—which initial checks suggest may have involved a compromised engineer's laptop enabling unauthorized withdrawals—Binance stated it reserved $6.34 billion in company funds to cover losses and had frozen approximately $3 billion of the stolen assets.
The fallout swiftly impacted publicly traded crypto exchanges and fintech companies. Coinbase saw its shares sink more than 14 percent, Strategy tumbled over 9 percent, and Robinhood dropped more than 10 percent. Cryptocurrencies also suffered under the bearish sentiment, with Bitcoin sliding over 5 percent to $76,500, while Ether and Solana fell nearly 5 percent and 7 percent, respectively.
While analysts noted that Binance's financial reserves could help the platform absorb the damage, industry experts emphasized that the breach serves as a severe confidence shock to the centralized infrastructure of the digital asset market.
