Binance Investigates Potential Record-Breaking Security Incident

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has confirmed a "security incident" on its platform. While initial reports have described the event as the "largest hack in history," the company is currently investigating the extent of the impact on digital assets. The incident is being compared to a record-setting $1.5bn hack on the Bybit exchange in 2025.

Investigation and Response

Early checks indicate the incident may have involved an engineer's laptop that had been compromised, which allowed an attacker to make unauthorized withdrawals. In response, Binance has stated it will "cover all losses" for its users. The exchange confirmed that about half of the impacted assets have already been frozen with the help of other platforms.

Industry observers had flagged concerns about a potential hack on the exchange hours before Binance officially confirmed the security issue. Founded in 2017, Binance serves more than 300 million registered users worldwide and reported having more than $160bn in assets under custody in 2024.

Attribution and Market Impact

Two analytics firms have attributed the incident to a North Korean hacking unit known as TraderTraitor. According to a report by AI-powered investigations company TRM Labs, several elements of the Binance attack resemble earlier North Korean-linked operations.

The news triggered immediate volatility in the digital asset market. Bitcoin dropped by more than 4% following the alerts, while the prices of other major cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum and Solana, also fell sharply. Binance noted that the security incident concerns Binance.com, distinguishing it from other platforms such as Binance.US.
