Binance Investigates Massive $6.3bn Security Breach

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has confirmed a major security incident involving approximately $6.3bn in assets. The platform reported that the breach, which occurred on Thursday, may have originated from a compromised engineer's laptop, enabling an attacker to execute unauthorized withdrawals.

Response and Recovery Efforts

In a series of online alerts, Binance stated that it has successfully frozen roughly half of the impacted assets through collaboration with other industry platforms. The exchange has publicly committed to covering all user losses resulting from the incident. While the investigation remains ongoing, the scale of the event potentially marks the largest cryptocurrency heist in history, significantly exceeding the $1.5bn hack experienced by the Bybit exchange in 2025.

The security breach is limited to the global Binance.com platform, with the separate entity Binance.US remaining unaffected. Other major industry players, including Coinbase, have confirmed they are monitoring the situation but were not impacted by the breach. Industry observers had raised alarms regarding suspicious activity on the exchange hours before the company officially acknowledged the security failure.
