Bolivia has declared a national state of emergency in response to severe weather conditions driven by the El Nino climate pattern. The emergency declaration was issued as the country grapples with mounting environmental pressures expected to peak later in the year.
The unfolding drought has impacted an estimated 78,000 families across the country. Agricultural and livestock sectors have also suffered significant damage, with authorities reporting the loss of more than 75,000 cattle.
Meteorological forecasts indicate that the current El Nino cycle is heading toward its peak in late 2026, prompting the Bolivian government to mobilize emergency measures to address the widespread water scarcity and agricultural losses.
