A regional Victorian community became the center of a police investigation this week after reports of gunfire directed at a vehicle prompted a bomb squad deployment.
Victoria Police stated that officers received reports indicating a man discharged a firearm toward a vehicle in Numurkah—located about two-and-a-half hours north of Melbourne—on Thursday. Detectives subsequently executed a search warrant at a local property on Saturday, where they discovered a suspicious device.
The specialized Bomb Response Unit attended the scene and successfully rendered the device safe. A 66-year-old man was arrested at the property and subsequently faced a multitude of charges.
Law enforcement charged the man with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, alongside offenses related to possessing and making an explosive substance. Additional charges include possessing unauthorized Victoria Police equipment, cultivating and possessing cannabis, and possessing a prohibited weapon without an exemption. The accused man was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Shepparton Magistrates' Court.
