Brazil Votes in Tight Runoff Between Lula and Bolsonaro Jr. Brazil is holding a highly unpredictable runoff election on Sunday, with leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva facing off against far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. The two candidates are virtually tied, with a narrow margin separating them after the first round of voting. The runoff campaign has focused on turnout, as abstention reached a record high in the first round, disproportionately affecting Lula's base. Lula, 80, has been seeking a fourth term in office, while Bolsonaro, the son of Brazil's jailed former president, is presenting a strong challenge. The outcome of the election is uncertain, with both candidates having significant support. Lula's campaign has gained ground in recent weeks, but Bolsonaro's surprise first-round victory has made him a favourite among some. The international community is watching the election closely, with concerns about the potential implications for regional politics and the influence of external actors. The election is being closely watched in the United States, where some have expressed concerns about the potential for a Bolsonaro victory to embolden right-wing movements in the region.
