Police use dogs and batons to dismantle housing protest camps in Portugal

In the early hours of Sunday, Portuguese police cleared at least 100 tents in central Lisbon and about 50 in Porto, using dogs and batons to break up housing protest camps and arrest more than 30 people.

The raids were part of a series of clashes that have unfolded over the past days as campaigners, inspired by similar tent‑camp protests in Spain, set up temporary shelters in city squares to draw attention to the country’s worsening housing crisis.

Police officers deployed canine units to locate and remove the tents, while batons were used to disperse crowds that resisted the removal. The operation resulted in over 30 arrests across the two cities.

These actions come amid growing tensions between authorities and activists demanding urgent housing reforms.
