The western Canadian province held a vote asking residents whether Alberta should remain a province or if the provincial government should initiate the legal process toward a binding referendum on separation. Separatist advocates had argued that the oil-rich province was overlooked by Ottawa and would retain more wealth outside of Canada. However, early broadcast projections indicated that the majority of voters decided against opening the path to independence.

Reacting to the outcome, Prime Minister Carney stated that Albertans chose unity and decided to move forward together within Canada. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also expressed satisfaction with the initial results, indicating strong support for remaining part of a united country. Meanwhile, local separatist leaders signaled that while the initial vote did not succeed, the broader political debate regarding provincial autonomy and future direction is expected to continue.

The referendum ballot also featured nine other questions addressing regional autonomy and immigration control, alongside the primary question concerning separation. Provincial officials continue the process of tallying votes across the remaining ballot items.
