The father of the man accused of launching a car attack on Australian independent MP Helen Haines has revealed that the politician was a long-standing family friend of more than two decades.
Local media identified the suspect as 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, an environmental campaigner from Wangaratta. In a public statement, the suspect’s father, Rod Nugent, and his partner, Christine Cunningham, described the episode as "devastating and unfathomable." They confirmed their long friendship with Haines, praised her as a deeply respected community member, and stated they are fully assisting Victoria Police with the ongoing investigation.
Bystanders intervened swiftly at the scene. Local barber Ricky Jefferies recounted pulling the suspect from the vehicle and discarding a knife he found in the man's pocket, noting that another individual courageously sat in front of the rolling car to halt the attack.
Police and federal authorities are coordinating the investigation into the isolated incident, which has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders across Australia.
