A local Victorian barber has recounted how he intervened during an attack on independent Australian MP Helen Haines, pulling the suspect from a vehicle and discarding a knife he found in the suspect's pocket.
The incident occurred outside Dr Haines's office in Victoria, where authorities say the driver performed a U-turn to strike the MP with a car before reversing to ram her a second time. Dr Haines, who represents the Indi division, remains hospitalized in a critical but stable condition following the attack.
Ricky Jefferies, whose barbershop is located near the scene, told reporters that multiple bystanders rushed to help without hesitation, with one individual stepping directly in front of the moving car. Jefferies stated that he removed a knife from the suspect's pocket because he was uncomfortable with the man's movements, throwing the weapon away before detaining the driver until police arrived.
The suspect, identified by local media as 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, was arrested at the scene. Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police are investigating the incident, noting that potential state and Commonwealth charges include causing harm to a public official.
