A local barber hailed as a hero has explained he felt he had "no choice" but to intervene after independent Australian MP Helen Haines was struck by a car outside her electoral office in Wangaratta, Victoria.
Bystander Intervenes After Car Rams MP
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, leaving the 65-year-old federal member for Indi in a critical but stable condition. According to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, witnesses reported that the driver performed a U-turn to strike the MP and then reversed to ram her a second time. Local barber Ricky Jefferies rushed into danger, pulling the suspect from the vehicle and detaining him until police arrived. Jefferies told local media that stepping in was "the right and safest thing to do" to prevent further injuries.
Police detained a 43-year-old man from nearby Tarrawingee at the scene, with local media identifying him as Brendan Nugent. Authorities have described the event as an isolated incident while they work to determine potential charges and investigate any underlying motives.
The attack has sent shockwaves through Australia's political community and local residents, who gathered at a vigil at the Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral in Wangaratta to light candles and leave floral tributes. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Jefferies for showing the "best of the Australian character" and offered support to Haines' family, friends, and community. Officials and experts noted that the episode highlights growing concerns over rising threats and safety challenges facing public figures across the country.
