İSTANBUL — Severe flash flooding struck Istanbul and surrounding regions following heavy rainfall, prompting the Istanbul Governor's Office and local authorities to suspend face-to-face education across multiple provinces.
Severe Weather Disrupts Transportation and Daily Life
Alongside school closures, administrative leave was granted to public sector employees including pregnant workers, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and female personnel with children under the age of 8—excluding critical health, security, and flood response units. Additionally, authorities prohibited the use of motorcycles and similar two-wheeled vehicles starting Wednesday evening until further notice.
Universities Shift to Remote Learning
Higher education institutions in the city also adjusted operations to ensure student and staff safety. Marmara University, Istanbul University, Istanbul Technical University, Health Sciences University, and Boğaziçi University suspended standard activities for the day. Meanwhile, numerous other institutions, including the Turkish-German University, Yıldız Teknik University, and various foundation universities, shifted their course schedules to online formats.
