China's Xi Jinping Elevates Military General to Politburo, Strengthens Party Discipline
China's top leaders have elevated Gen. Zhang Shengmin, the only remaining general on the Central Military Commission, to the Politburo, the country's top governing body. This move comes as President Xi Jinping seeks to strengthen party discipline and extend his grip on power.
The decision was made during a four-day closed-door meeting of top Communist Party leaders, who also adopted a resolution on strengthening self-governance, discipline, and anti-corruption within the party. The resolution emphasizes the need for the party to maintain its "progressive nature and purity" and "close, flesh-and-blood ties with the people." This move is seen as a continuation of Xi's efforts to root out corruption and maintain control over the party.
Zhang Shengmin's promotion to the Politburo is significant, as it marks the first time a military general has been appointed to the body in several years. Zhang also holds a position overseeing internal discipline for the military, serving as deputy secretary of the CMC Commission for Discipline Inspection. This move is seen as a way for Xi to consolidate power and ensure loyalty within the military.
The meeting also reviewed the earlier purges of top members and military officials, confirming the personnel changes. Analysts say the focus of the purges has shifted from solely targeting corrupt officials to also targeting underperforming officials. The attendance rate at the meeting was reportedly the lowest since the times of former leader Mao Zedong, with 74% of party members in attendance.
The move is seen as a way for Xi to solidify his position ahead of his expected fourth five-year term as party leader. The resolution adopted during the meeting will guide the party's actions in the coming years, and is seen as a way for Xi to maintain his grip on power and ensure the party's continued dominance.
