The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the immediate shutdown of the kitchen at Mumbai’s Fortis Hospital following a routine inspection that uncovered severe hygiene violations. Authorities reported finding cockroaches actively scurrying around food preparation areas and visible fungus growth within the facility.
The hospital kitchen closure is part of a broader statewide enforcement sweep led by the FDA targeting major food establishments and healthcare facilities for safety and sanitation breaches. During the recent crackdown, regulators also suspended licenses and penalized multiple prominent food outlets across Maharashtra, including several Domino's Pizza locations and mall food counters, for failing to meet safety standards.
Food safety officials emphasized that strict compliance is mandatory, particularly within medical facilities where vulnerable patients rely on safe, uncontaminated meals. Fortis Hospital's kitchen operations will remain suspended until authorities verify that all sanitary corrections and deep-cleaning protocols have been fully met.
