Democratic Socialists of America Secure Historic Wins in US Midterms

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) marked their most successful night in national politics to date during the US midterm elections on Tuesday, securing a record number of victories for federal office candidates backed by or affiliated with the movement.

Across multiple states, DSA-backed and aligned candidates running on platforms addressing universal healthcare, housing, immigration reform, and opposition to the war in Gaza triumphed in congressional contests:

  • New York: Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Brad Lander were elected to the US House of Representatives for the first time, while Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won re-election.
  • Michigan: Incumbent Rashida Tlaib won re-election alongside first-time winner Donavan McKinney, and William Lawrence defeated a Republican candidate in a competitive district.
  • Colorado: Melat Kiros won a House seat by a wide margin, campaigning on platforms opposing the war in Gaza and calling for the abolition of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
  • Pennsylvania: Former state lawmaker Chris Rabb won a US House seat for the first time in Philadelphia.
  • California: Angela Gonzales-Torres defeated a Democratic incumbent for a seat in Los Angeles.
  • New Jersey: Adam Hamawy, a surgeon who has worked in Gaza and aligned with the movement, won his district.

The victories highlight growing legislative representation for the left-wing movement as newly elected officials prepare to take their seats in Washington.
