Democratic Voters Celebrate Abdul El-Sayed’s Senate Victory in Michigan

Historic Win Extends Democratic Control Amid National 'Blue Wave'

During his victory speech, El-Sayed addressed his cheering supporters and delivered a direct message concerning his future in Washington. Reflecting on the campaign trail, he told the crowd, “To all the parents who struggled to explain why the president openly mocks someone for their name or how they pray, let them know tomorrow that the bad guys lost.” He also addressed Donald Trump directly, noting, “Donald – I know you struggled with my name. So after JD swears me in in January, you can just go on to call me Senator.”

El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health director who emerged from a bruising Democratic primary against Haley Stevens, centered his campaign on economic affordability, removing money from politics, enacting Medicare for All, and halting funding for foreign wars. His victory maintains the Democratic Party's long-standing hold on the seat, continuing a streak where no Republican has won a Michigan Senate race since 1994, enabled this cycle by the retirement of two-term Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
