General Strike: Thousands March in Italy
Tensions ran high in Rome and Turin as thousands of protesters took to the streets in a general strike, demanding space for study, work, and peace. The protests, which began in the afternoon, saw large crowds gather in various cities across Italy, including Milan, Bologna, Reggio Calabria, and Vicenza.
In Rome, the student-led protest marched from Ponte Palatino towards Ponte Sublicio, with some reports of clashes at the Colosseum. In Milan, protesters occupied the tangenziale, a major highway, while in Bologna, the highway was also blocked. In Reggio Calabria, protesters chanted "Governo vaff**" (a derogatory term for the government), while in Vicenza, a confrontation at Ponte Alto resulted in the use of tear gas and water cannons.
The protests were sparked by a range of issues, including the cost of living, education, and employment. Protesters are demanding greater access to education and job opportunities, as well as an end to the current government's policies.
The strike has brought much of the country to a standstill, with many businesses and services closed or operating on reduced hours. The protests are expected to continue throughout the day, with further demonstrations planned in other cities.
