Two men who killed a mother and her four-year-old daughter while racing their high-performance cars in Leeds city centre have been jailed. Hardeep Bhachu, 29, was sentenced to 12 years and Jasskamal Riyat, 37, to 16 years at Leeds Crown Court on Monday. The pair were convicted of causing the deaths of Justyna Hulboj, 27, and her daughter Lena Czepczor in a crash on Scott Hall Road on 16 January 2023. The court heard that Riyat's BMW reached speeds of up to 89mph in a 40mph zone before Bhachu lost control of his Audi, mounting the pavement and striking the victims. Judge Singh described the road as "not a race track" and said the consequences of the drivers' actions were "immeasurable". The judge also praised the victims, saying they "did nothing wrong" and were simply walking to school. He added that the drivers' actions had placed speed and competition above the safety of everyone around them. Bhachu's lawyer described him as a "normal person who's made a massive mistake", while the victims' fiancé and father of Lena, Dominik Czepczor, said the loss of his family had left a "huge void" in his life. The case marks the end of a long criminal justice process for the victims' family, who have been waiting over two years for justice.
