Michigan Senate Race Shaken as Rep. Haley Stevens Endorses GOP Nominee Mike Rogers Over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed

A high-stakes Michigan Senate race took an unexpected turn when Democratic Representative Haley Stevens broke ranks to endorse Republican nominee Mike Rogers, stunning state and national Democrats.

The endorsement follows a contentious period between Stevens and her former Democratic primary opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated her in the primary contest. Stevens had originally been scheduled to appear alongside El-Sayed at a scheduled unity event, but instead pivoted to support the Republican candidate.

The move drew immediate condemnation from Democratic party leadership at both the state and national levels, while top congressional Democrats quickly reaffirmed their backing for El-Sayed. In response to the endorsement, El-Sayed downplayed the political fallout while addressing reporters, stating that he remains focused on issues important to voters and does not dwell on Stevens' decision.

Despite the intraparty friction, recent polling released ahead of the development showed El-Sayed holding a 49% to 42% lead over Rogers, largely driven by consolidated support from likely Democratic voters. As the campaign continues, El-Sayed has maintained his schedule, appearing at events alongside other prominent Democrats, including state Senator Mallory McMorrow, South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn, and Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks.
