YUCATAN, MEXICO — Greenpeace has reported that faecal waste is polluting drinking water supplies across Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. According to the environmental organization, the contamination poses a serious health concern for local communities relying on the regional water network.
The group's findings point to nearby industrial pig farms and municipal wastewater systems as the primary sources of the pollution. The untreated or poorly managed waste has increasingly seeped into the local hydrological systems, compromising the safety of drinking water in the area.
Environmental advocates are calling on authorities to implement stricter regulations on agricultural waste management and upgrade municipal wastewater treatment infrastructure to protect public health and the region's fragile water resources.
