First Minister Demands Equal Status with Scotland in New UK Government Letter
First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has called for a "new deal" for Wales from the UK government aimed at establishing parity with Scotland. Rhun ap Iorwerth assumed the role of first minister following Plaid Cymru's victory in the Senedd election in May, marking the first time the party won power and ending a prior administration.
In a formal letter, the first minister requested the transfer of several powers to Cardiff. The specific responsibilities sought include:
- Policing
- Justice
- Rail
- The Crown Estate
In response to the demands, a UK government spokesperson stated that the administration is "committed to building a stronger and fairer Wales in a stronger and fairer United Kingdom." The spokesperson additionally noted an intention to respect the governments across the nations of the UK, pledge to give a fair hearing, and review anything that is put forward.
