Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has landed in the United States following his election loss, denying accusations that he is fleeing his home country as pending Supreme Court investigations continue.
Flávio Bolsonaro arrived at an airport near Miami alongside his wife, Fernanda, and their two daughters. The family's arrival in Florida follows a roundabout journey that included entering Argentina and boarding a private flight toward Ecuador before reaching the United States.
The travel comes shortly after Bolsonaro lost Sunday's presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and failed to comply with a Brazilian Supreme Court order to surrender his passports, leading authorities to cancel them. Bolsonaro, who is the subject of ongoing investigations regarding alleged corruption and money laundering, has denied wrongdoing and claimed he is the target of a coup d'état and political persecution.
The U.S. State Department confirmed it would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family. Meanwhile, the legal and political fallout surrounding his departure continues to unfold in Brazil.
