Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has landed in the United States, arriving at an airport near Miami alongside his wife and two daughters. The arrival follows a circuitous journey through Argentina and Ecuador after he lost Sunday's presidential runoff election to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro's departure and subsequent arrival in Florida put an end to intense speculation regarding his whereabouts. Earlier in the week, he failed to comply with a Brazilian Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports, and Brazilian authorities subsequently cancelled his travel documents. The US State Department confirmed to the BBC that it would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family.
The former presidential candidate is currently the subject of pending investigations before Brazil's Supreme Federal Court regarding allegations of corruption and money laundering, including scrutiny over bank transfers tied to a film production. Bolsonaro has denied all wrongdoing.
