France is preparing for weeks of continued demonstrations following some of the worst civil unrest the country has seen in years, as related protests and looting begin to spill over into neighboring Italy.
The protests in France initially erupted as demonstrations supporting high school students before spiraling out of control, resulting in buildings set ablaze, widespread looting, and a record number of arrests totaling approximately 2,400 nationwide. French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly condemned the widespread disorder, describing the actions as "unbridled violence."
In response to the ongoing crisis, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that he has instructed regional prefects to implement partial curfews in localized urban areas to curb further unrest. Authorities have attributed the escalation of violence to criminal elements and groups associated with the ultra-left.
Meanwhile, the unrest has begun to cross international borders. The *gilets jaunes* movement has issued calls for further demonstrations in France, while in Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has scheduled emergency crisis talks following reports of looting and unrest in Italian cities.
