PARIS — Following days of intense demonstrations across France that resulted in record numbers of arrests and widespread structural damage, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo stated that entire streets in the capital have been left devastated.
Clashes and Arson Follow Student-Led Protests
The unrest escalated over the weekend as demonstrations supporting high school students erupted into violent clashes with police. Authorities reported that more than 1,200 individuals were arrested nationwide by Saturday. Amid the chaos, rioters set buildings ablaze and looted shops, pushing law enforcement to their limits during what is being described as some of the worst civil unrest France has seen in years.
Local authorities and emergency services continue to assess the extensive property damage across Paris and other affected urban centers as demonstrations persist throughout the country.
