Heaviest Jellyfish on Record Captured on Night Dive in Pacific Ocean
A remarkable underwater videographer, John Roney, has captured footage of the heaviest jellyfish on record during a night dive in the Pacific Ocean. The creature, a lion's mane jellyfish, was spotted in the Salish Sea, a marginal sea located between British Columbia in Canada and Washington State in the United States.
The videographer, who shared his experience on Instagram, described the encounter as a thrilling moment. He initially spotted a long, thin tentacle trailing overhead, which he followed for over a minute before coming upon the massive jellyfish. The footage shows the enormous creature pulsing through the dark water, with marine snow drifting gently downwards behind it. The vibrant colors of the jellyfish's tentacles are a striking feature of the video.
Lion's mane jellies are known to be one of the world's largest species of jellyfish, with an estimated maximum weight of over 1,000kg. They are also known to have a nasty sting, making it essential to exercise caution when encountering them. The videographer warned viewers to be aware of the jellyfish's presence, emphasizing that it is not a creature to be touched.
