The man accused of attacking independent federal MP Helen Haines has made his first court appearance in Wangaratta. Brendan Nugent did not apply for bail during the hearing following the incident that left Haines critically injured.
Nugent faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the Commonwealth offense of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Prior to the court proceeding, Victoria Police Chief Mike Bush and Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett held a press conference in Melbourne to provide updates on the ongoing investigation.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the police interview with the accused as extensive, noting that the motivation behind the alleged violent attack remains unknown. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from politicians across the political spectrum, highlighting growing concerns regarding safety, intimidation, and rising aggression directed at public officials in Australia.
