The Project and Local Resistance
The proposed development, backed by Meta, was slated for a 320-acre site just outside the city of 17,000. First introduced to local officials in early 2025, the project promised to be the largest in the city’s 150-year history. However, the proposal faced immediate scrutiny due to its massive resource requirements, including an estimated daily water consumption of 75,000 gallons.
Newly elected councilwoman Sydney Brennan and other community members spearheaded the resistance, raising concerns about the environmental impact and the long-term consequences of hosting such a large-scale industrial facility. The pushback highlighted growing national tensions regarding the energy and water demands of the AI boom.
Following sustained community pressure, the project was ultimately scuttled. The outcome in Menomonie serves as a notable case study in how small municipalities are increasingly challenging the secretive expansion strategies of major technology corporations.
