Emergency Response and Safety Measures
In anticipation of the storm, authorities ordered the evacuation of nearly 100,000 residents, with approximately 50,000 people moving to safety in Andhra Pradesh and 48,000 in Odisha. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu emphasized that the primary objective of the state's response is the preservation of human life.
To manage the crisis, officials established over 2,000 cyclone shelters across 20 districts. Emergency efforts include the deployment of 1,100 medical teams and the securing of more than 30,000 fishing vessels. Millions of residents have received mobile emergency alerts as the storm tracks through a region home to an estimated 12 million people.
Potential Impact
The IMD has warned of significant infrastructure damage, including the potential for widespread destruction of thatched housing, localized flooding, and the uprooting of power and communication lines. The storm is also expected to cause extensive damage to standing crops. While the immediate focus remains on the Indian coast, neighboring Sri Lanka and Nepal have also issued weather warnings as the system continues to interact with the land.
