Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has filed six charges against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, asserting that the allegations are not driven by any personal enmity. The charges were presented during a meeting of the INDIA bloc at Kharge’s residence, where the opposition coalition outlined its grievances regarding the electoral process.

Kharge listed the accusations, which include concerns over the centralisation of electoral rolls, procedural irregularities, and alleged bias in the conduct of recent elections. He also outlined three specific demands aimed at ensuring greater transparency and fairness in the election commission’s operations. The opposition leaders emphasised that the move is part of a broader effort to hold the election authority accountable.

The development comes amid heightened political tension, with various parties, including the BJP, reacting to the INDIA bloc’s actions. While some have dismissed the charges as politically motivated, the opposition maintains that the issues raised are substantive and require immediate attention from the election commission.

The meeting marked the beginning of what the INDIA bloc has termed a “mock impeachment” of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, signalling a concerted push to challenge the election commissioner’s leadership. The outcome of these proceedings remains uncertain, but they have already sparked fresh debate over the independence and integrity of India’s electoral institutions.
