INDIA Bloc Holds 'Public Impeachment' of CEC Gyanesh Kumar

The INDIA opposition bloc convened a "public impeachment" proceeding against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on October 31. The event, hosted at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, was chaired by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.

Context of the Proceedings

The symbolic impeachment follows weeks of escalating tensions between the opposition alliance and the Election Commission. The bloc has leveled allegations of electoral irregularities, which they refer to as "vote chori" (vote theft), and has indicated plans to present evidence of these claims to the President of India.

The event, originally scheduled for an earlier date, was postponed due to inclement weather. The proceedings serve as a precursor to a larger mobilization by the opposition, which has also organized a major rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan scheduled for November 1. Authorities have implemented traffic restrictions in the capital to accommodate the anticipated turnout for the upcoming demonstration.

The INDIA bloc continues to maintain pressure on the Election Commission, utilizing these public forums to voice concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
