KIEV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported major disruptions involving the Starlink satellite network amid heavy Russian aerial assaults, stating that interception drones rely on the connection. Zelensky highlighted that Russian forces launched hundreds of drones targeting energy infrastructure, logistics, and railways, attempting to exploit connectivity issues.
In response, Elon Musk clarified via X that Starshield—the military version of Starlink—is owned and controlled by the United States government, with any operational limitations determined by the U.S. military and ultimately the president. Musk added that commercial Starlink services are limited to civilian or defensive functions and cannot be utilized for offensive military operations.
The latest developments unfolded during a wave of intensive overnight bombardments across Ukraine that left at least six people dead, caused widespread power outages in Kiev, and struck multiple thermal power plants. Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions intensified as Ukrainian leadership discussed international backing in London with British officials, following meetings with Prime Minister Andy Burnham and an audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.
