The Villa Vie Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship currently undertaking a multi-year global circumnavigation, has suspended its operations after soaring fuel costs rendered the journey unsustainable. Approximately 200 passengers were ordered to disembark in Cambodia following the announcement on Tuesday.
Escalating Operational Costs
The US-based operator reported that fuel expenses in parts of Asia have spiked dramatically, rising from $1,800 to as much as $8,000 per cabin monthly. These costs have been driven by a global increase in fuel prices following the outbreak of the Iran war earlier this year. Despite efforts to mitigate expenses by slowing the ship's itinerary, the operator determined that continuing the voyage was no longer feasible.
The vessel, which departed Belfast in October 2024, was more than 750 days into its planned continuous journey. The ship features extensive amenities, including a pool deck, pickleball court, and multiple dining venues. Passengers on board hold either permanent residencies—ranging in price from $120,000 to $440,000—or monthly rental agreements starting at $3,500.
The company is currently coordinating with those affected to manage disembarkation and provide temporary living arrangements while the future of the voyage remains uncertain.
