The operators of the Villa Vie Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship currently on a multi-year global voyage, have suspended operations after soaring fuel prices made the journey financially unsustainable. Approximately 200 passengers have been ordered to disembark in Cambodia as the company enters a 60-day period of restructuring.
Escalating Costs Force Suspension
The US-based cruise line reported that fuel costs in parts of Asia have surged dramatically, rising from $1,800 to as much as $8,000 per cabin monthly. Despite attempts to mitigate these expenses by slowing the ship’s speed and extending port stays, the company stated that these measures were insufficient to offset the financial burden. Management noted that passing these costs directly to residents was not a viable solution.
The Villa Vie Odyssey departed Belfast in October 2024, embarking on a planned 3.5-year journey intended to visit nearly 150 countries. The vessel had been at sea for over 750 days before the suspension was announced on Tuesday. The operator is currently coordinating with passengers to arrange disembarkation and temporary living accommodations while the company attempts to recapitalize, though officials have cautioned that the future of the voyage remains uncertain.
