DUBAI — Villa Vie Residences has suspended operations for its continuous global residential cruise, cutting short a multi-year voyage due to mounting financial pressure from soaring fuel expenses.

The company announced the shutdown this week, stating that the operating model became unsustainable. According to Villa Vie, monthly fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia surged from a historical average of about $1,800 to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000. Efforts to curb consumption by lengthening port stays failed to bridge the funding gap, and the company was unable to pass those steep increases on to travelers.

The sudden halt impacts passengers aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey, which is currently in Cambodia. The company stated it is assisting residents with disembarkation, coordinating temporary living accommodations, and evaluating potential restructuring and recapitalization strategies.

The ship's journey began in October 2024 following several departure delays tied to reactivating the 30-year-old vessel—formerly the MS Braemar—after a multi-year layup. The suspension arrives just months after Villa Vie announced ambitions to expand its fleet with a second residential ship following strong sales.
