Met Police refers itself to watchdog over letter about Meghan's father

The Metropolitan Police Service (Met) has referred itself to the police watchdog over its handling of a letter containing allegations about Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex's, father.

The letter, which made allegations about Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, was investigated by the Met's specialist crime unit. However, the force has now referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after an internal review found that the initial investigation was not handled properly.

The Met said in a statement that it had referred the case to the IOPC "as a precautionary measure" and that it was "committed to transparency and accountability". The IOPC will now investigate the handling of the case and determine whether the Met followed the correct procedures.

The allegations in the letter were not disclosed in the statement, but it is understood that they related to Thomas Markle's behavior. The Met's referral to the IOPC is the latest development in a long-running saga surrounding the Duchess of Sussex and her family.
