WASHINGTON — A personal letter sent by US Vice-President JD Vance to a top Iranian security official may represent a final diplomatic opening to prevent a new military conflict between Washington and Tehran, according to reporting by The Guardian.
The correspondence, delivered Sunday following mediation by Qatar, was addressed to Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council. The diplomatic push comes with lingering hopes tied to Tehran's response, expected shortly after US midterm elections.
Under the terms outlined in the communication, Iran must agree to initial commitments regarding its nuclear program at the onset of negotiations. In exchange, the proposed framework offers US sanctions relief and stipulates that the strategic Strait of Hormuz would be opened within seven days of the process beginning.
