Democrats Expand Lead in Uncalled Mississippi Senate Race
If successful, Mr. Colom would become the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in Mississippi in 44 years and the state's first Black senator since Reconstruction. Nationally, Democrats secured majorities in both the House and Senate during the midterms amid voter dissatisfaction with the economy during President Trump's second term. However, control of a handful of congressional and Senate seats, including races in Mississippi and Alaska, remained uncalled as votes continued to be processed.
Legal teams for both campaigns have engaged as the final ballots are verified. Lawyers for Senator Hyde-Smith formally requested that election officials preserve provisional ballots, indicating a potential legal challenge, while Mr. Colom's campaign objected to portions of that request. Counties in Mississippi have until November 13 to certify their final election results to the state.
