Oil Prices Register Steepest Decline Since July Amid Hopes for Iran Talks
Global oil prices experienced their sharpest single-session drop in three months on Monday, driven by investor optimism that diplomatic channels could prevent further escalation in the conflict with Iran. International benchmark Brent crude fell 7.6% to settle at $104.77 per barrel, while U.S. crude dropped 7.3% to close at $96.46 per barrel.
Market sentiment shifted following reports that the Trump administration may favor ongoing negotiations over military action. Iranian state media cited comments from the country's president indicating authorities had been granted permission to pursue dialogue, aligning with reports that President Donald Trump favored letting negotiations proceed following upcoming midterm elections.
Energy markets have remained volatile due to ongoing geopolitical tensions that have pushed global crude up roughly 45% since the conflict began in late February. Diesel futures also fell 5.4% on Monday, though fuel costs continue to face upward pressure from constrained global supplies linked to both the Middle East conflict and disruptions in Russian refining capacity.
