Dozens of supermarkets and retail locations across seven European countries have been targeted in a cyber-attack that remotely raised the temperatures of their commercial refrigerators and freezers. The incident affected stores in Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia, and Finland.
Roughly 40 Delhaize supermarkets were impacted across Belgium and Luxembourg, alongside locations operated by Carrefour, Colruyt Group, and an Ikea store in Mons. In Sweden, multiple ICA and Coop locations were hit, while Finland saw disruptions at several K-stores. The breach also extended to 13 SuperValu stores in Ireland, small businesses and butcher shops in the Netherlands, and a Selver supermarket in Estonia.
Stephan Moelans, CEO of Sabcobel, stated that technical teams worked overnight and through the morning to disconnect the compromised units from the network. While the company had been implementing protections following the October attacks in France, Moelans noted that the hardware required physical modifications rather than simple software updates. National cyber-security agencies in Belgium and Sweden are actively monitoring the situation, and the UK's National Cyber Security Centre announced it is coordinating with international partners to investigate. It remains unclear who is responsible for the attack.
