Pakistan’s National Assembly has officially approved a proposal to establish a joint parliamentary committee dedicated to preparing recommendations for transparent elections. According to reports from The Express Tribune, the newly formed body will incorporate members from both the National Assembly and the Senate.
The initiative was brought forward by Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, utilizing Rule 244B of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007. Following consultations with the Senate chairman and parliamentary party leaders, the National Assembly speaker will finalize the committee's composition to proportionally reflect all represented parties.
The committee's core responsibilities include formulating electoral reform suggestions, exploring the integration of modern voting technologies, and drafting necessary legislative acts or constitutional amendments. The body is also authorized to form subcommittees and must present its findings to parliament within a designated timeframe set by the speaker.
