Yonsei University Severance Hospital Study Finds PET Scan Predicts Preventive Brain Radiation Therapy Benefits for Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients

Researchers at Yonsei University Severance Hospital have made a groundbreaking discovery that could revolutionize the treatment of small cell lung cancer patients. A team of experts from the Department of Oncology, Department of Nuclear Medicine, and Department of Radiation Oncology, led by Professors Kim Hye-ryeon, Hong Min-hee, Kim Chang-gon, and Jo Eung-hyeok, analyzed data from a study and found that those with higher metabolic tumor volume (MTV) benefited significantly from preventive whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT).

The study revealed that patients with higher MTV had a lower risk of cancer progression in the brain after receiving preventive WBRT. In contrast, patients with lower MTV did not show a significant difference in survival rates regardless of whether they received the treatment.

According to Professor Kim Hye-ryeon, "Our study suggests that we can identify patients who will benefit most from preventive WBRT using MTV. We plan to verify these findings through further prospective studies and develop personalized treatment strategies based on patient-specific risk and treatment benefits."

This breakthrough research has the potential to improve the lives of small cell lung cancer patients by providing a more accurate and targeted approach to treatment.
