Major Political Parties to Share Equal Representation on Senate Electoral Reforms Committee

The government has unveiled a proposed seat distribution for the Senate’s Electoral Reforms Committee, ensuring equal representation for Pakistan’s three primary political forces. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry announced on Thursday that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will each be allocated two seats on the panel.

Broadening Parliamentary Participation

In addition to the three major parties, the committee structure includes single-seat allocations for the Awami National Party (ANP), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), National Party, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F). Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar is tasked with finalizing the committee’s official membership following consultations with coalition partners and opposition leadership.

This development follows a push by the PPP to integrate the opposition into the electoral reform process. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari recently urged National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai to submit nominations for the committee, emphasizing the need for cross-party cooperation on critical issues, including appointments to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
